Xavier Delorme is a Full Professor at the Laboratory of Informatics, Modelling and Optimization of the Systems (LIMOS) of Mines Saint-Etienne (France). His works seek to find models and algorithms to support Decision-Making in Industry.
His research is mainly based on the use of Operations Research methods (combinatorial optimization, integer linear programming, graphs, metaheuristics, multiobjective optimization) to evaluate and optimize the performance of industrial systems. In this sense, it is at the intersection of several scientific fields, such as Industrial Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science. He defends a problem-oriented, rather than a method-oriented, view of Operations Research. The central question he addresses is to identify how Operations Research models and methods can contribute to better management of complex industrial problems. Although the image of Operations Research is too often narrowed to optimization methods, its ability to respond effectively to industrial needs depends just as much on how well these tools are used and how well they meet expectations.
For this purpose, he has developed an original approach based on a systemic study in order to analyze all the decisions required to obtain a complete solution, as well as their relationships. Such an analysis seeks to identify the decisions for which an optimization model could be useful and to choose the right decomposition (or integration) level to take advantage of existing models ability to solve subproblems while reducing the risk of ending up with suboptimal decisions. Different formulations, or combinations of formulations, can then be considered in order to find the most suitable to provide an effective answer to industrial challenges.
Throughout his career, Pr. Xavier Delorme has developed original expertise in line balancing, production planning and scheduling, reconfigurability and sustainable manufacturing systems. He is currently Chair of the Working Group ‘Design and modelling of flexible and reconfigurable manufacturing systems’ of the IFAC Technical Committee 5.2.
