Présentation

Benjamin Denecheau is an associate professor in Sociology of education at the Université Paris Est Créteil, member of the LIRTES (UR 7313). The study of **social and educational inequalities**, particularly on the pupils and students at **the margin of school**, is a central focus of Benjamin Denecheau’s research interests. His research focus on specific **social and educational intervention** (the residential care system for example) which constitute a new social space with its proper socialization, or may present some dissonance with other space of socialization (young offending teams), like in the social class, peer group or in the family. Schools and teachers are in difficulties to work with these pupils and this leads to different positions by acting with implicit or explicit discrimination or not. Social carers or youth justice officers may also be asked formally or informally to work on school education. We observe some tensions and some dissonance because of their proper distance or proximity to the school world. These works interrogate the **reconfiguration of the educational spaces** and the **evolution of the relation with the school world** for actors who are not, historically, expected to work on this field. His research focus also on the **school dropout** and **school persistence**, with a focus on the paradoxical educational trajectories for pupils who are not expected to succeed. This leads to interrogate the contribution of school and society to the educational success. Methodology : Qualitative approach, comprehensive approach, mixed methods, international comparison Keywords: social and educational inequalities, educational margins, new educational problems, school drop-outs and achievement, social work, access to education
