Thesis title : **Cultivating the State in a Rural Municipality in Cuba : Decollectivization Policies and Food Production in Cuban Cooperatives**
*Abstract :* Based on a 16-month ethnography in a rural municipality in western Cuba, and the extended follow-up of two agricultural cooperatives, I study the transformations of local power relations in the uncertain context of the redefinition of Cuban socialism. In the ruins of gigantic fruit plantations, once considered an ideal of socialist rural development, I question the construction of the revolutionary state - through the framing of the economy and the near-total takeover of agricultural production - and its recent reconfigurations in the context of decollectivization policies. While the Cuban economy has mainly been approached through the prism of informality, I take seriously the functioning of the planned economy and the materiality of the economic and metabolic relations that it organizes within the cooperatives. To do so, I include central actors in agricultural production: cultivated and invasive plants, livestock, micro-organisms, whose agency often escapes revolutionary master plans, but also the more modest undertakings of farmers. I analyse how multispecies and power relations intertwine and contribute to the ‘state effect’ (Michell, 1991, 2009).
*Research interests :* anthropology of the state, multispecies ethnographies, infrastructures, development, environmental history, agricultural policies, ecofeminism.
