Présentation
Senior research engineer for the french [CNRS](http://www.cnrs.fr "http://www.cnrs.fr") (National Center for Scientific Research), I am working since November 1983 at the [Paris Observatory](http://www.obspm.fr/obsparis.en.shtml "http://www.obspm.fr/obsparis.en.shtml"). Formerly, my work was related to the european astrometric satellite [Hipparcos](http://www.rssd.esa.int/hipparcos/ "http://www.rssd.esa.int/hipparcos/"), successively on its Input Catalogue, then data processing, and finally contributing to its science exploitation. I am now involved in the outcome of the [Gaia](http://www.rssd.esa.int/index.php?project=Gaia "http://www.rssd.esa.int/index.php?project=Gaia") satellite (launched in 19-12-2013, end 15-01-2025) since 1997, and in particular I have been in charge of the scientific validation of the Gaia catalogues and now managing the data processing of Non-Single Stars (NSS).
So, in brief, my main field is astronomy ;-)
Beside some technical work (IT-related: e.g. software development e.g., in the past, on [databases](http://cdsads.u-strasbg.fr/abs/1988ESOC...28..269A) or the first ObsPM [Web server](http://cdsads.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/nph-bib_query?1995VA.....39...97A)) or, from times to times, teaching ([statistics](http://wwwhip.obspm.fr/%7Earenou/textdea.pdf), computer languages), I defended my [Ph.D.](http://wwwhip.obspm.fr/%7Earenou/PS-papers/These.pdf "/~arenou/PS-papers/These.pdf") in 1993 and the full list of my scientific papers and technical notes can be found on my web [page](http://wwwhip.obspm.fr/%7Earenou/biblio.html "/~arenou/biblio.html") (and in [HAL](../search/index/?q=F.+Arenou&submit=&sort=producedDate_tdate+desc&docType_s=ART+OR+COMM+OR+OUV+OR+COUV+OR+DOUV+OR+OTHER+OR+UNDEFINED+OR+REPORT+OR+THESE+OR+HDR+OR+LECTURE&submitType_s=file&rows=100) or [here](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-abs_connect?author=arenou&sort=CITATIONS&db_key=AST "http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-abs_connect?author=arenou&sort=CITATIONS&db_key=AST") on the NASA ADS for the articles only). These papers deal mostly with:
- the interstellar extinction (development of a tridimensional [extinction model](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=1992A%26A...258..104A&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207) in the solar neighborhood),
- building the Hipparcos Catalogue (contribution to the [Input Catalogue](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=1992A%26A...258...74T&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207); merging of the astrometric [intermediate data](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=1997A%26A...323L..49P&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207); contribution to the [double star annex](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=1997A%26A...323L..53L&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207) of the Hipparcos Catalogue),
- the use of the Hipparcos data (proof -in a broad sense- of the [ precision and accuracy](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=1995A%26A...304...52A&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207) of the parallaxes; demonstrating and avoiding the [statistical biases](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=1999ASPC..167...13A&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207) on the data derived from them),
- the determination of distances, velocities, duplicity for[ open clusters](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=1999A%26A...345..471R&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207) and [ pre-main sequence](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=1999A%26A...352..574B&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207) stars
- the binary stars (determination of [masses and luminosities](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=2000IAUS..200P.135A&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207) of SB2s; first astrometric confirmation for a [LTT binary ](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=2002AJ....123.2033R&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207); confirmation of the [ brown dwarf desert](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=2000A%26A...355..581H&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207) with Hipparcos; orbital determinations used for the [ statistics of binarity](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=2003A%26A...397..159H&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207)) for solar type stars
- the exoplanets (the oldest proof of the [ transit of HD 209458](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=2000A%26A...355..295R&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207); and also that [Hipparcos cannot determine](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=2001A%26A...372..935P&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207) their orbital inclination),
- the preparation to the Gaia mission ([on-board scientific data handling](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=2005ESASP.576..335A&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207) and [ double and multiples stars](http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=2005ESASP.576..557A&db_key=AST&link_type=ABSTRACT&high=3f6541bf8523207)), the scientific data validation of the [DR1](../../hal-01435677v1), [DR2](../../hal-01868112v1) catalogues and now the handling of [binary and multiple stars](https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2023A%26A...674A..34G/abstract).
