Bio Underhill
James W. Underhill is Full Professor at Rouen University, France. Off and on since the early 1990s, he has been involved in live poetry events (before the Open Mic and Slam became fashionable) in Prague, Paris, Grenoble & Rouen, Normandy. He is the author of Voice and Versification (Ottawa University Press, 2016), and from 1993-1999 he worked under the direction of the famous French poet-thinker-translator, Henri Meschonnic (1932-2009) on translation, rhythm, poems & poetics. He has worked as a professional translator of both French and Czech. Underhill is also a leading ethnolinguist and the author of Creating Worldviews: Ideology, Metaphor and Language (Edinburgh University Press, 2011), Ethnolinguistics and Cultural Concepts: Truth, Love, Hate and War (Cambridge University Press, 2012). He co-authored Migrating Meanings: sharing Keywords in a global world (Edinburgh University Press) with Mariarosaria Gianninoto in 2019. The Rouen Ethnolinguistics Project (REP) home | Rouen Ethnolinguistics Project was founded by Underhill to explore words, worldviews and the philosophy of language with online conferences, interviews and roundtables.
