
Joost Van Rossum
Presentation
Born in 1947 in Apeldoorn (The Netherlands), Joost van Rossum has been a student at the Department of Theology of the University of Leiden. He graduates in 1974 having obtained the degree of « Doctorandus » (« Master »). During his studies he had become a member of the Orthodox Church and started to develop a particular interest in the theology, spirituality and liturgy of the Byzantine Church. From 1974 until 1976 he continues his studies at St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Crestwood, New York, where he receives another Master’s Degree in Theology. In 1981 he returnes to the United States in order to be enrolled in the doctoral program of Fordham University in New York, where he obtains his PhD with a dissertation on the theology of Gregory Palamas, which he wrote under the direction of the renowned specialist of this Byzantine theologian, Fr John Meyendorff. From 1985 until 1996 he teaches at St Herman’s Orthodox Seminary in Kodiak, Alaska (New Testament and Patrology). Having spent one year at St John the Baptist Monastery in Maldon, Essex (Great Britain) he leaves for Paris in 1997 to teach at St Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute (History of the Ecumenical Councils and the Byzantine Church, Patristic Exegesis of Holy Scriptures), until his retirement in 2018. During that period he has also taught at the Superior Institute of Ecumenical Studies in Paris.
