D'origine allemande, Karsten Plamann a effectué ses études de physique à l'[Université de Göttingen](http://www.uni-goettingen.de/) en Allemagne. Il a fait sa thèse de doctorat au Laboratoire d'Optique Physique de l'[ESPCI](http://www.espci.fr/) et de l'[Université Pierre et Marie Curie](http://www.upmc.fr/) à Paris sur la caractérisation photothermique de couches de diamant. Au cours de ses engagements subséquents à l'[Institut Max Planck de la Physique des Plasmas](http://www.ipp.mpg.de/) à Garching, au [Laser Zentrum Hannover](http://www.lzh.de/) (Allemagne) ainsi qu'à l'[École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne](http://www.epfl.ch/index.fr.html) (Suisse) il a travaillé entre autre sur l'analyse des solides par rayons d'ions, la vélocimétrie Doppler, les lasers à fibres de puissance et à addition de photons, la tomographie en faible cohérence et la microscopie biomédicale. Depuis 2001 il est enseignant-chercheur à l'[ENSTA](http://www.ensta.fr/) où il enseigne l'optique et la physique.
