Leopoldo Sanchez est directeur de recherche INRAE au sein de l’UMR de génétique forestière BioForA. Il porte une thématique qui a pour objet l’optimisation du processus d’amélioration génétique chez les espèces d’arbres forestiers à production de bois, pour la rendre plus pertinente face aux challenges environnementaux qui menacent l’adaptation des variétés, plus efficace en prenant en compte les différentes contraintes qui affectent son rendement, et en intégrant le potentiel offert par les outils de la génomique. Il utilise les outils de la génétique quantitative, la modélisation de la dynamique des populations, la statistique et la génomique, et ces outils l'ont amené à explorer différents aspects clés de l’amélioration génétique, comme l'optimisation de la gestion de la diversité génétique, l'incorporation des caractères de plasticité dans l'évaluation génétique, et l'adaptation de la sélection génomique et multi-omique au modèle arbre forestier. Il a fait des contributions substantielles à la mise en place de la sélection génomique chez des espèces clés comme le peuplier et le pin maritime en France, et chez d’autres espèces forestières dans e cadre de plusieurs initiatives européennes sur la sélection innovante. Avant l’INRAE, il a travaillé sur différents aspects théoriques de la gestion de la diversité génétique, avec un début comme généticien chez la *Drosophile*. Aujourd'hui, il se considère chanceux de travailler avec de grands arbres, qui sont des modèles stimulants pour les biologistes expérimentaux.
