Faculty member and researcher affiliated with the Materials for Health (MPS) research team, led by Prof. Jean-Marie Nédélec, within the Institute of Chemistry of Clermont-Ferrand (ICCF), directed by Prof. Fabrice Leroux.
Doctoral School: Engineering Sciences (ED SPI), National Polytechnic Institute (INP), Université Clermont Auvergne (UCA)
Research theme: Medical devices and container–content interactions (Head: Prof. Valérie Sautou)
Research focus: Clinical evaluation of plasticizer release from medical devices: patient exposure, toxicological risk, and environmental health approach Since her PhD thesis, Prof. Lise Bernard’s research has focused on the clinical evaluation and safety of medical devices, particularly content–container interactions involving polymer-based infusion systems and the associated risks for hospitalized patients. Her early work investigated drug stability and compatibility in contact with infusion medical devices, demonstrating that injectable drug quality and safety may be significantly impacted not only by physicochemical conditions, but also by the materials constituting the devices themselves. These findings contributed to promoting a comprehensive and integrated approach to medication safety fully incorporating the medical-device dimension. Her research subsequently evolved toward the investigation of additive and plasticizer release from PVC-based medical devices, especially endocrine-disrupting compounds such as DEHP and alternative plasticizers. Through the combination of analytical chemistry, ex vivo migration models, clinical biomonitoring and toxicological approaches, her work contributed to the characterization of patient exposure to plasticizers in several high-risk clinical settings, including intensive care, ECMO, hemofiltration and neonatal care. These studies notably demonstrated the major contribution of medical devices to neonatal exposure to plasticizers during critical developmental periods. Her current research activities are structured around three main axes:
(i) evaluation of plasticizer migration and patient exposure associated with sterile medical devices;
(ii) development of innovative preventive strategies to reduce migration and improve medical-device safety, including hybrid sol-gel barrier coatings and risk-management algorithms;
(iii) toxicological and translational assessment of endocrine disruption and mixture (“cocktail”) effects related to multi-exposure to plasticizers, particularly in vulnerable neonatal populations. Following a hospital-university mobility at INSERM U1231 (NuTOX laboratory, Dijon), her research further integrated translational toxicology and environmental health perspectives, with a particular focus on developmental exposure windows and long-term neurodevelopmental consequences. She currently coordinates NEOMIX, a multidisciplinary project funded by the French National Research Program on Environment and Occupational Health (ANSES PNR-EST 2023), investigating endocrine-disrupting mixture effects associated with neonatal exposure to plasticizers released from medical devices and their potential impact on neurodevelopmental outcomes. Head of Pharmacy Department and Chief Pharmacist (Hospital Pharmacy Unit) – Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital
Responsibilities: Strategic management and leadership, project management and implementation, human resources management, support and development of clinical and institutional projects, contribution to quality policy and risk management, healthcare expenditure control and optimization, integration of quality of work life (QWL) initiatives, oversight of contractual agreements and delegation processes Since July 2024, Professor Lise Bernard has served as Head of the Pharmacy Department and Chief Pharmacist at Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital. In parallel, she has led the Management and Support Unit of the Pharmacy Department since January 2024, contributing to the strategic and operational coordination of pharmaceutical, clinical, and institutional activities across the hospital. Her responsibilities include strategic governance of the pharmacy department, implementation of institutional transformation projects, coordination with hospital executive and functional departments, quality and risk management policies, supervision of healthcare expenditure optimization, and development of innovative organizational models integrating clinical pharmacy and patient-centered care. She is notably coordinating the MoSUP project, a large-scale pharmacy modernization and centralization program combining logistical transformation with the deployment of clinical pharmacy services.
A major focus of her current activities is the structuring and deployment of a hospital-wide pharmaceutical care pathway aimed at preventing medication-related iatrogenesis through a graded and risk-stratified approach to clinical pharmacy. This strategy combines pharmaceutical expertise, medication reconciliation, medication reviews, personalized pharmaceutical care plans, therapeutic education, and coordinated follow-up throughout the patient care continuum.
Under her leadership, clinical pharmacy activities have been progressively expanded across multiple medical specialties and multidisciplinary day hospitals, including oncology, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, neurology, geriatrics, transplantation, and chronic disease management programs. She initiated and coordinates MoSIRIS, an innovative multidisciplinary day hospital dedicated to the prevention of medication-related iatrogenesis in older adults and vulnerable patients. This program is based on a holistic and territorially integrated model involving clinical pharmacists, geriatricians, internists, primary care physicians, nurses, social workers, and allied healthcare professionals. The MoSIRIS pathway combines comprehensive medication assessment, pharmaceutical care planning, deprescribing strategies, coordination with community healthcare professionals, and patient-centered risk prevention interventions.
