Malcolm Walsby was educated at the University of Kent in Canterbury and the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris before being appointed postdoctoral fellow and, a few years later, lecturer in history at the University of St Andrews in Scotland where he taught for ten years. He left for the University of Rennes 2 in 2012 before being elected Professor of Book History at Enssib in Lyon in 2019 where he is director of the Gabriel Naudé research centre.

He is currently undertaking a project on the creation and use of Sammelbände in Europe.
The author of several books on early modern history, his most recent monographs are L’imprimé en Europe occidentale, 1470-1680 (2020) and Booksellers and printers in provincial France 1470-1600 (2021).
