Présentation
Joshua de Paiva (born 1993 in London) holds a PhD in philosophy from Sorbonne University (aesthetics & philosophy of arts). He defended his thesis titled "For an aesthetics of the living. A philosophical inquiry into the encounters with living beings in contemporary art" in 2023, under the supervision of Marianne Massin, and before a jury composed of C. Bonicco-Donato, B. Trentini, J-M. Schaeffer and B. Morizot. He is an Associate Member of Centre Victor Basch (Sorbonne Université) and member of the research collective Nuée.
Since November 2025, he is developing his research on the "aesthetics of the living" at Grenoble Alpes University, as a Post-doc Fellow at the MaCI, supported by the GATES project (Grenoble ATractiveness and ExcellenceS), International Excellence in the Humanities Programme (2025-2027), funded by National Research Agency (ANR) under the France 2030 program (ANR-22-EXES-0001), and affiliated to the AAU-CRESSON laboratory : "The beauty of living forms. Rethinking our aesthetic appreciation of other living beings in times of extinction."
From 2017 to 2022, he was editorial assistant for the art and ecology magazine Billebaude (Fondation François Sommer) in Paris. He has also worked as a Research Assistant in the Arachnid Research Laboratory of Studio Tomás Saraceno in Berlin in 2017-2018, and has collaborated with contemporary artists on several exhibitions and projects. Alongside his research activities, he recently co-founded the counselling and curatorial office La Déménagerie (lademenagerie.com).
