Solange Ayache is Senior Lecturer in English and EFL at the Graduate School of Teaching and Education of Sorbonne University, and a member of the Theatre research group of VALE. Her research focuses primarily on contemporary British theatre and performance with an interdisciplinary approach and strong interests in the medical and environmental humanities (representations of nature and the climate crisis, ecocriticism, ecofeminism, disability studies, trauma studies, care ethics, mental health) and in the links between art/literature and science (neuro/psychology, cognitive science, quantum physics). Her work looks at how urgent issues about the state of the world, the state of our brains, the state of our bodies and our perception of them are depicted in theatre, dramatic literature and spoken word. Entitled 'In-Yer-Head Theatre: Staging the Mind in Contemporary British Drama. Towards a Quantum Psychopoetics of the Stage', her PhD dissertation (University of Paris-Sorbonne & University of Sheffield, 2017) offered an analysis of a number of dramatic experiments and theatrical productions exploring mental illnesses and the workings of the human mind. Using theories ranging from psychoanalysis to cognitive science and inspired by the paradigm shift of quantum mechanics and its interrogations on the role and nature of consciousness and the psyche, she argued that, starting with Martin Crimp's Attempts on her Life (1997) and Sarah Kane's last play 4.48 Psychosis (1999), part of British theatre has moved from the ‘in-yer-face’ sensibility of the ‘nasty nineties’ to an aesthetic that could be called ‘in-yer-head’, which renews stage realism. She is also interested in innovative performance art practices and other cross-media artworks addressing these issues through activist engagement and/or in educational contexts. Other research interests include gender studies, invisible disabilities, children's literature and theatre, drama in education, neurodiversity and neurodevelopmental disorders in the classroom, psychopedagogy and TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language).
