François H. Lallier earned his PhD at the University of Bordeaux in 1988, working with Jean-Paul Truchot at the marine station of Arcachon on the comparative respiratory physiology of marine crustaceans. After a two-year stay in Pat Walsh's lab at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences in Miami, he joined André Toulmond as an Associate professor at Université Pierre et Marie Curie. He then focused on the adaptation of marine invertebrates to deep-sea hydrothermal vents, a challenging environment where annelids (e.g. *Riftia* or *Alvinella*) or mollusks (e.g. *Bathymodiolus*) rely upon chemotrophic bacterial symbionts to flourish. Starting with targeted studies on how animals could cope with low oxygen/high sulfide he gradually turned to more global approaches, analyzing gene expression variations in relation to symbiosis in these extreme environments. Since 2001 he is a Professor at the [University Pierre et Marie Curie](http://www.upmc.fr/) (UPMC, Paris 6), located at the [Station Biologique de Roscoff](http://www.sb-roscoff.fr) in Brittany where he is heading the department « [Adaptation and Diversity in the Marine Environment ](http://www.sb-roscoff.fr/umr7144.html)», a joint laboratory with the CNRS. He has also headed a national research network, [ECCHIS](http://www.sb-roscoff.fr/Ecchis/), gathering French scientists dealing with the “Biology of Deep-sea Chemosynthetic Ecosystems”, and has been Chief Scientist on several Oceanographic Cruises. He has a record of more than 80 publications (H-index 23).
